Surah Al-Buruj, the 85th chapter of the Quran, is a Makki Surah revealed in Mecca. It consists of 22 verses and takes its name from the word “Buruj,” meaning towers or mansions, mentioned in the first verse.
The Surah begins by swearing an oath by the sky with its lofty towers, setting the tone for a powerful message. It recounts the historical incident of the people of the trench who faced persecution for their faith. These individuals, despite being subjected to severe trials, chose martyrdom over renouncing their beliefs.
The Surah emphasizes the consequences of denying the truth and persecuting the believers. It serves as a reminder of Allah’s ultimate authority and the accountability of individuals for their deeds. The story of the people of the trench illustrates the resilience and steadfastness required in the face of adversity.
Surah Al-Buruj encourages believers to reflect on the lessons from history, appreciate the sacrifices made by those who stood firm in their faith, and reinforces the concept of divine justice. It concludes with a reassurance of Allah’s mercy for the believers who fulfill their obligations and remain patient in the face of trials.
